The mission of the Writers Circle is to promote Farmington area writers of any genre and skill level, to advise each other on being published, and to establish useful contacts within the regional and national literary communities.
The first meeting went very well. In addition to myself (Phil Slattery) five other local authors attended: Roberta Summers, Vicki Holmsten, Cluff Eliott, Tony Bartley, and Yvonne Ravenwood. The meeting lasted an hour and a half, during which we discussed a wide range of topics including publication, marketing, the use of social media for publicity, the goals of the group, the importance of contacts within the literary community, and many other topics. The first meeting was on November 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Farmington Hastings’ Hardback Café (3020 E 20th St, Farmington, NM 87402; 505- 326-6838). At this meeting I hoped to establish how many people are interested in participating in a writers circle, to start developing strategies to promote local writers, to discuss future meeting dates and times, and to establish the basic needs for the group.
The second meeting was on December 10 at 7:00 pm at Hastings Hardback cafe once again. The topic for that evening was the importance and writing of query letters and the discussion was lead by Roberta Summers, author of Pele’s Realm and judge for the Pike’s Peak Writers Conference.
The third meeting was on January 7, 2016, again at Hastings Hardback Café at 7:00 p.m. and last until about 8:30. Traci HalesVass, professor of English at San Juan College, led the discussion on writing pitches to attract the attention of an editor or agent. New attendees were John and Kathleen Murphy, Aijirokingston Tooti Keetso, and Alrenzo Benally-Black. Both Tooti and Alrenzo are with Darksomnia Productions (http://m.youtube.com/#/user/darksomnia).
The Writers Circle has been monthly since November.
Future topics will focus on other business aspects of writing including marketing, which will be one of the primary foci of the group. Everyone is welcome to attend. If anyone in the Farmington/Four Corners has an interest in joining, please contact us via this website by commenting below.
